Important News about this Website

So to confirm what you all may have noticed, we had a breach in website security sometime this past week. Long story short, someone managed to hack into this website and insert code into part of our homepage that was apparently intended to download malware onto the computers of our visitors. My very sincere apologies to anyone who was infected. If any of you suspect you may have been infected, or aren’t sure, I highly encourage you to scan your computers with your preferred anti-virus or anti-spyware program. If you do not have any such software, I recommend Ad-Aware 2007, which is available for free at www.lavasoftusa.com.

I’ve spent last night and today plugging every security hole I can find. Please believe me when I say that I’m doing everything I can to ensure this does not happen again. As part of this process, I’ve ended up changing the way the Captain’s Blog is run.

  • Users are now required to register and/or log in before they are allowed to comment. You can register by clicking on the “login” link in the top-right hand corner of the blog. This will bring you to a page that will ask you to input a username, email address and password.
  • Once you’ve registered and have logged in, you will be brought to your profile page. This is a page where you can fill out more information about yourself. To return to the blog from this page, click the “Visit Site” button at the top of your screen.
  • To log out of the blog, just click the “logout” link at the top of the blog.

If there’s been a benefit to this, I have had the chance to experiment with some new blog plugins. I think someone asked if there was a way to be automatically emailed whenever the Captain’s Blog is updated. Just look for the checkbox on the registration page. If you ever change your mind, you can unsubscribe yourself by logging in to your username and password, clicking “Subscriptions,” and then deselecting all of the checkboxes under “Subscribed Categories.”

All right. Hope that that’s clear to everyone. I really hope that no one was negatively affected by any of this. Best of luck, everyone!

Website Feedback

Hey, everyone,

What with the upgrade just about wrapped up, I just wanted to ask what all of you think of the new site. If anyone is having trouble viewing it, I’d really appreciate it if you’d let me know. Please include in your post what operating system (i.e. PC or Mac) you’re using, as well as what web browser, and I’ll see what I can do.

Otherwise, I just wanted to thank Joe and Ed for giving me the opportunity to work on such a fantastic project. I hope that you all enjoy the new site!

Thanks,
Jon Stout
